Pub Pondering: The Old Crown, Holborn

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of a slightly-above-minimum wage fortune, must be in want of a bloody good burger. London is brimming with places to get your chops round a decent patty at the moment and the Old Crown Pub allows you to sup cocktails and quaff real ale at the same time. Goodbye milkshakes,it’s the mojitos that bring all the boys to the yard here.

SLURP GONE

SLURP GONE

Escaping some BIBLICAL summer rain, my pal and I dove into this easy little boozer between Holborn and TCR, expecting a bog standard pub grub fare. LO AND BEHOLD we were wrong. A whole sheet full of whimsically named dude food greeted us. All notion of our saintly (read: fucking dull) diets, which we affectionately call ‘NoCarbsNoFatNoFun’ flew out of the window quicker than a hare who had just had sex with Mo Farah before running for the last tube. I mean if you’re gonna break the rules, do it properly.

My affections were being jostled for by the “Right Up Your Kilt Rib-Eye Steak”, the Dolly Parton Pork Ribs (I LOVE YOU DOLLY) and the “Colonel Can Do-One Chicken Burger”. I mean, a menu with puns stitched right in there is always going to be winner for me. (The fish and chips are called The Codfather. THE CODFATHERRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). In the end we were both inevitably wooed by the burgers, me by the Philli cheese steak burger, the ‘Zidane’ for my chum- one of the world cup themed burgers that was on offer.

They were delivered promptly to us, piled high. LOOK AT THAT DIRTY DELICIOUS FILTH!!!!!!!

Philli Cheese Steak burger- a beef burger topped with shaved beef (BEEF ON BEEF I LOVE BEEF) with all the trimmings and chilli sauce.

The Zidane- Chicken and a lot of PUNGENT French cheese.

On the side, some fabulously crunchy crispy whitebait (dunked in a very good home-made tartar) and a literal bucket of chips. A bucket.

Oozy, melty, cheesey goodness, with a huge whack of chilli thrown in for good measure, this burger gave the rest of them in London a blooming good run for their meaty money. If I had but one small criticism, it was that the bun was far too wussy to contain this beast of a burger. A toasted sourdough or brioche bun would have stood more of a chance.

Despite the fact that the football was on, the place still had an impish Victoriana charm about it, pleasingly at odds with it’s American menu. A big old pipe organ overlooks the joint from behind the bar:

A lovely little drinking hole in the bustle of Central London with GREAT MEAT. Well worth a dive into, biblical rain or non! (Still killing myself at the Codfather. THE CODFATHEERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
